6 Things to Look For When Choosing a Text Messaging Provider

Is the company a text messaging originator or a reseller?

Text message originators have their own technology, as well as their own dedicated short codes.  A reseller is a company that sells technology and short code access of a technology originator.  This may not seem like a crucial issue, but when multiple clients from multiple resellers try to access the short code simultaneously the system becomes bogged down and messages are not sent on time, sometimes even a day late!

 

Does the company have a dedicated 5 digit short code with its messaging service and do they use it properly?

Short codes are special telephone numbers, usually 5-6 digits, which can be used to address SMS and MMS messages from mobile telephones.  This is the industry standard for using mobile marketing.

 

Does your provider allow you to import numbers?

The ability to import numbers may seem like a good thing, but actually is illegal.  Any service that allows for manual entering of cell phone numbers without the necessary opt-in procedures violates FCC law.

 

What kind of technical support does the company offer?

A good technical support program is a necessity for a successful campaign.  The difference between a good message and a great message can sometimes be all about timing.  If something goes wrong and you can’t contact your support staff, the opportunity may pass you by.

 

Does the company provide training options?

The effectiveness of a text messaging campaign is limited to how well it is understood by your staff.  The more thoroughly the program is understood, the more effective it will be.
